Optimal Perioperative Fluid Management Lunch Symposium: B. Braun Philippines' First Major Lecture on Fluid Therapy
Lecture designed to improve fluid management practices in Philippine healthcare
As part of its goal of continuing education in the healthcare sector, B. Braun Medical Supplies Inc. has sponsored a lunch symposium during the 51st Postgraduate Course of the Foundation for the Advancement of Surgical Education, Inc. (FASE), the educational arm of the UP-PGH Department of Surgery. Held last September 3 at the Diamond Hotel, the symposium brought together more than 200 surgeons from all over the country to listen to B. Braun’s guest speaker, noted surgeon Dr. Raymundo Resurreccion, on his lecture on fluid therapy.
Entitled “Optimal Perioperative Fluid Management,” the lecture was centered around debunking fallacies in current fluid management surgical practices in the Philippines. To supplant these fallacies, he recommended goal-directed fluid therapy and optimal, not maximal, use of fluids. A recommendation of note is the preference of balanced crystalloids to 0.9% saline. This comes with an evidence level of “high” and a recommendation grade of “strong” by the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) society.
The lecture sparked the interest of the audience, who later sought out the B. Braun booth to learn more about fluid management. As an Isotonic Electrolyte Solution and the only balanced crystalloid in the Philippine market, Sterofundin ISO has been placed under the limelight during this lecture, and is steadily gaining recognition due to the growing movement of ERAS principles in the Philippines.
Following the success of the symposium, B. Braun aims to create a stronger partnership and initiate more collaborations with FASE to elevate the standards of fluid management practices in the field of Philippine healthcare.
